why does a jet of air diverge when it is expelled from a nozzle?
anyone know why a jet of air spreads out as it flows out of a nozzle?

The pressure of exhaust gas just at the exit of nozzle is higher than the atmospheric pressure. So the gas has to expand, and during expansion, the gas follows path of least resistance. The flow is likely to be turbulent- any small disturbance to the flow (due to microscopically rough surface) will further magnify. So the gas will spread out.
