In electrode dynamics, why might it be necessary to divide the working electrode from the counter electrode?
Often, a divided electrochemical cell is used, in which the compartment containing the the working electrode is separated by a glass frit from that containing the counter electrode. Why might this be necessary?
As a diffusion barrier; otherwise the ions of interest could diffuse right back to whence they came.
